The Best Natural Elixir for the Cold/Flu

It's flu season and it seems that everyone in my family is getting sick! If you are like me, you don't like to use or give your kids over the counter drugs or potent medicines. I always look for natural, organic remedies that work. Well, this elixir found me many years ago during my college days by a friend of mine. I use it now with my own family. It's so simple and easy. I add my adjustments accordingly. Sometimes I add dried sage for tummy problems or mint for taste.

Easy Preparation- Lemon-Orange Elixir:

  1. Clean 3 oranges and 3 lemons with soap and water (you can add more if you choose). Citrus fruits are packed with vitamin C and A and of course, fiber. Then slice them with the peels on into thin circle slices.
  2. Put a pot of about 6 cups of water on the stove and boil the oranges and lemons together.
  3. Add fresh ginger, as much as you like but not too much because it can make the elixir spicy. Ginger is a natural anti-inflammatory so it will help with congestion. It also serves as a natural pain reliever in addition to helping with nausea and digestion. All that in one ground root! Let that mixture boil for a good 10 minutes or until the water thickens a little.
  4. Let cool. Poor in a cup and add a honey. Honey has many medicinal properties. It acts as an anti-inflammatory and has anti-bacterial and oxidant properties. Make sure that the water is not too hot when you add the honey, otherwise the honey will loose all its effectiveness and not be able to do its trick!
  5. Presto! Drink as much as you can for the time you are sick or feeling like you will be sick. You will feel better in no time!

Ingredients: water, oranges, lemons, ginger, honey

How Families Can Embrace Simple Self-Care to Soothe Fussiness & Stress

This blog explains how simple family self-care routines can help reduce stress when caring for a colicky or frequently crying baby. When an infant is uncomfortable, the entire household can feel overwhelmed and exhausted. The article emphasizes that small, consistent habits can support both parent wellbeing and baby comfort, creating a calmer home environment.

It highlights practical strategies such as short daily walks, simple meal routines, quick breathing exercises, reduced screen time before bed, and consistent sleep cues. These small habits help regulate stress, improve family rhythms, and make it easier for parents to respond calmly during fussy moments.

The blog also suggests creating a simple 10-minute plan for difficult times of day, with a short parent reset (breathing, relaxing shoulders, softening the voice) followed by a consistent soothing routine for the baby. Repeating small, predictable actions helps both parents and babies feel more secure.

Overall, the message is that tiny, repeatable self-care practices can build family resilience, reduce overwhelm, and create a more peaceful routine—even during challenging colic phases.
